Early Life & Background
Washington Sundar was born into a cricket-loving family.
His father, M. Sundar, played domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu.
A retired army man named P.D. Washington lived near his home in Triplicane, Chennai.
He financially helped Sundar’s father by paying for school fees, cricket gear, and books, allowing him to pursue his passion for cricket.
In gratitude, when M. Sundar had a son in 1999, he named him Washington, to honor the late army officer who helped him achieve his dreams.
Washington started cricket training under his father’s guidance along with his elder sister Shailaja Sundar. His father wanted him to become a batsman, but he later developed his spin bowling skills.
Childhood & Passion for Cricket
At age 9, during an Under-14 match, Washington was struck on the head by a ball and received five stitches.
He showed immense determination by returning the very next day and scoring an unbeaten 39 runs, helping his team win.
During his teenage years, he began professional training under M. Venkatraman, a former Indian bowler, who encouraged him to develop as a spinner.
In 2013, he became Tamil Nadu’s top-ranked U-16 cricketer, after which he was selected for a BCCI 40-day camp at the National Cricket Academy, Mumbai.
Domestic Career
Washington made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy on 6 October 2016.
Like his senior Ravichandran Ashwin, Sundar started as a batsman and later became an off-spinner.
In October 2017, he scored his maiden first-class century against Tripura in the Ranji Trophy.
He was also part of the 2016 Under-19 World Cup squad, marking the start of his national recognition.
