Anant Joshi as Yogi Ji

First of all, I want to say the mastery Anant Joshi has achieved in portraying Yogi Ji. I didn’t think anyone could portray him this way. Very well done.
Portraying the life of someone who is actively involved in politics, the Chief Minister of a state, isn’t easy. But Anant has made it look so natural. Congratulations for that.

The Story & Inspiration

We’ve seen many biopics before, like The Accidental Prime Minister on Dr. Manmohan Singh and even PM Narendra Modi. But this one is amazingly well done.
The story, as a young Ajay transforms into Chhote Maharaj Ji, searching for his life’s purpose with Mahant Avaidyanath Ji, makes you believe the film has been crafted with sincerity.

The story is inspired by Shantanu Gupta’s book, “The Monk Who Became Chief Minister.”

Plot Overview

The story begins in Uttar Pradesh, where crime is at its peak—from political assassinations to the nexus of politics with gangsterism.

  • Ajey, a boy from Uttarakhand, comes to university for education.
  • His fire against injustice makes him famous across the campus, but he still feels a void inside.
  • Meanwhile, Ajey is influenced by Mahant Shri Avaidyanath Ji, head of the Gorakhpur monastery, who connects him to the Nath sect.
  • This transforms Ajey into Chhote Maharaj Ji (Yogi Adityanath).

From sitting outside the District Magistrate’s office for 36 hours to standing tall against the biggest strongman, Chhote Maharaj Ji’s real-life struggles resemble the journey of a film hero—except it’s all true.

The film also shows his growing stature in Gorakhpur and Purvanchal, his fearless leadership as an MP, and his challenges against powerful political rivals.

Performances

The most special aspect of the film is Anant Joshi’s performance.

  • To prepare, he watched over 150 hours of Yogi Ji’s clippings, studying his language and dialogue style.
  • Despite recovering from jaundice during the shoot, he delivered a strong portrayal.
  • In the film’s opening, VFX was used to hide signs of his illness.
  • His acting captures Yogi Ji’s subtle nuances, mixing intensity and emotion.

Another special note: during the entire shoot, no crew member ate non-vegetarian food, showcasing their commitment.

Key Dialogues & Scenes

Some dialogues received whistles and applause in theaters. For example:

  • “Baba doesn’t just appear, he appears.”
  • Emotional moments like Yogi’s mother demanding answers from Mahant Ji, or the father’s heartfelt scenes, are beautifully portrayed.

Music & Cinematography

The film’s music is excellent, elevating emotional and dramatic moments. Visuals of Uttar Pradesh, Gorakhpur, and political settings look authentic and intense.
