Early Life & Struggles
Friends, Prashant was born to Rupa Tamang and Madan Tamang in Darjeeling, West Bengal, and was brought up in Tasuk village. He studied at St. Robert’s School.
His parents died in an accident, after which Prashant essentially dropped out of school. He loved playing football since childhood. His father passed away when he was only 10 years old, and his family faced severe financial difficulties.
To support the family, his mother started a small shop selling daily necessities. When Prashant turned 18, he took over his father’s job in the Kolkata Police.
Journey from Police Constable to Indian Idol Winner
While stationed in Kolkata Police, Prashant joined the Kolkata Police Orchestra. He had no formal training in singing.
His senior officer Zulfiqar Hussain (SP) encouraged him to participate in Indian Idol Season 3. He auditioned in 2007, got selected, and later won the competition.
